National Canadian Film Day 150
The Beacon Theatre presents National Canadian Film Day 150 on Wednesday, April 19 with two free movies.
Presented by Reel Canada, National Canadian Film Day 150 is a one-day celebration of Canadian cinema, in honour of Canada’s upcoming sesquicentennial. National Canadian Film Day 150 will put Canadian cinema in an unprecedented spotlight, and promises to be the largest film festival in the world.
On April 19, great Canadian movies will be screened from coast to coast to coast. Here in Burns Lake, the Beacon will be screening two films.
At 7 p.m., the Beacon presents Snowtime!, an animated film in 3D, and a family-friendly contemporary hit full of chilly thrills, snow-fort hills, a rollicking energy that is unstoppably fun - and that includes a brilliant anti-war message.
And at 9:15 p.m., the Beacon presents Empire of Dirt, an award winning 2013 drama. The movie is a traditional mothers-and-daughters story in which the characters’ Cree heritage and the role it has in their lives and relationships forms the heart of the drama.
Coffee house for our grads
Grad parents and friends will present ‘Coffee house for our grads’ on Friday, April 28 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Lakes District Secondary School (LDSS).
Admission and refreshments are by donation. There will be excellent door prizes and student art cards for sale. Local performers include: Three men and a bass drum, The Barkers, Pilots of the bow, and many talented students.

Last live opera broadcast this season
The last broadcast in this year’s Met: live in HD series takes place at The Beacon Theatre on Sunday, April 30 at 1 p.m. sharp: Verdi’s classic opera La Traviata.
One of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the standard repertoire, La Traviata tells the tragic story of Violetta, and her lover Alfredo. La Traviata features some of opera’s best known and most recognizable melodies. Sonya Yoncheva brings her acclaimed interpretation of the doomed courtesan Violetta Valéry to live in HD audiences for the first time, opposite rising American tenor Michael Fabiano as her lover, Alfredo.
Thomas Hampson sings one of his most acclaimed Met roles as Giorgio Germont, Alfredo’s disapproving father, in a revival of Willy Decker’s staging, conducted by San Francisco Opera music director Nicola Luisotti.
