The Lake Babine Nation (LBN) is moving towards securing funding for an $80,000 trail project along Babine Lake.

The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN) approved at its Feb. 21 meeting of the board of directors the application by LBN to the Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT) for up to $30,000 towards the project.

All applications to NDIT must be supported through local government resolutions in order to be considered, Nellie Davis, regional economic development coordinator with the RDBN told Lakes District News.

According to an RDBN document, the Destination Trails project would consist of a single track nature trail network and its first phase would be the Tachet Shoreline Trail running about 1,200 metres along Babine Lake.

“The project builds on Lake Babine Nation’s comprehensive trails and recreation plan, and will also play a significant role in attracting visitors to the nearby, newly developed campground,” the document said.

The $80,000 would cover trail crew training, trail layout and design, and trail construction.

Of the total funding, $10,000 has already been confirmed from LBN, with $40,000 from the Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund and $30,000 from NDIT still pending.
