The Lakes District Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) celebrated the grand opening of their new downtown centre recently.

Since its formation in Burns Lake over 60 years ago, the office has been relocated a number of times.

When Dan Metcalfe purchased the building on Highway 16 and subsequently offered it to the society at a very reduced rent, it was impossible to turn down.

That, coupled with the generous financial support of WaterBridge Equipment Inc. over the past couple years, is a great incentive to the many volunteers who donate so much of their time.

Tom Kelway, a local businessman, was instrumental in getting it up and running in the community and Berenice Haggarty was one of the first volunteers to join.

Berenice is still on the volunteer list today.

We have over 20 dedicated unit volunteers, besides all the people that organize and work to make the annual Relay for Life fundraiser such a success.

President Rhoda Anderson and the team are very grateful to the community for all its support over the past 60 years and would like to invite interested people to join the group.

There is a craft table in the office displaying items for sale that have been made and donated by both our volunteers and other generous people of the community.

Proceeds from sales are being donated to the Northern Lodge opening in Prince George in 2012.

The Canadian Cancer Society was formed in 1938 at the request of the medical profession.

Their mandate at that time was to spread important information about the early warning signs of cancer to the Canadian public.

Today the focus is on support, prevention, and research.
