Help for Burns Lake families

A diagnosis of dementia affects many people: the individual, family, and caregivers.

A diagnosis of dementia affects many people: the individual, family, and caregivers.

They can all learn what to expect throughout the journey by participating in a free video conference series offered in Burns Lake by the non profit Alzheimer Society of B.C.

It starts on May 19, with a video conference titled Understanding Dementia, which provides basic information about dementia and its impact on people.

On May 26, the series continues with understanding communication.

The third video conference in the series, understanding behavior, will explain how changes in the brain often appear as changes in the person’s behaviour. It takes place on June 2.

Participants will gain an understanding of how certain messages, demands or beliefs can contribute to stress and burnout. They will also learn how to recognize the signs of burnout, and discover ways to deal with caregiver stress.

Video conferences run from 10 a.m. to noon at the Lakes District Hospital and care centre. Space is very limited. Call Jones at 1-866-564-7533 or e-mail ljones@alzheimerbc.org.
