Burns Lake resident Wren Gilgan captured this beautiful photo of a merlin, formally known as pigeon hawk.
The merlin was previously known in North America as the pigeon hawk because it looks and flies like a pigeon. “This magnificent raptor shrieked overhead as I walked to the mailbox,” described Gilgan. “Fortunately for me it perched for a moment on an old snag.”
