Last weekend was a weekend of bazaars, lots and lots going on. A great place to do your last minute shopping. Helps everyone out too.

Last weekend was a weekend of bazaars, lots and lots going on. A great place to do your last minute shopping. Helps everyone out too.

On Dec. 3 there was a home based business fair. This was held in the Francois Lake hall. It was held from 11 to 3. There was a lunch and it’s a nice place to visit as well.

Interesting tidbit

On Friday’s mail I received a card from one of my cousins in England. I checked the date stamp and it took eight days to come from the old country to my box at Francois Lake.

That’s good time I would say. Here is another one I keep in close contact with, my niece in Calgary, and it takes eight days to get a letter both too and from Calgary, sounds funny but it’s true.

Some times a letter gets there in a week but not often. I am not blaming anyone but just a matter of interest. Our daughter is in Northern Ireland and we have had mail come in a week, but most often 10 days depending on the mail flights.

No puppies

Last week I was reading with a warning and good advice. Don’t buy your kid a puppy for Christmas unless you are prepared to look after it yourself within about six months.

Kids as a general rule will grow tired and neglect the pup and it ends up in the dog pound. Weather

This I must say this is a different winter than usual as here at the Landing we have very little snow, grass is still showing. Some places the cattle are still grazing. It’s now many years ago now but it comes to my mind a year when we didn’t have much snow early on.

Our family went to the Christmas day service at St. Luke’s at Francois Lake. On the way home I cut through our pasture to check our horses and I was wearing dress oxfords as there was so little snow.

For Christmas days dinner mother picked some flowers for the table. But on Dec. 27 it started to snow and big time and it’s dropped down cold. We went to the New Year’s eve dance and the temp said -40 F. What a shocker that was. The lake froze over night and good ice so in a week or so folks were driving on the ice. I checked on my mothers write-ups I have at hand but sorry to say she has not given any dates. Maybe we will have a similar winter, who knows?

Good turn out

A good turnout at the Grassy Plains Gospel Church on Sunday last. It was soup and bun day after the service. It’s a great lunch nobody ever goes away hungry. Greg Unruh was the speaker. On Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. there will be a Christmas concert at the Grassy Plains Gospel Church. Everyone is welcome.

Money

In headlines in our last paper there is something that is very important. Swimming pool society requests public input... options for $50,000 in funding to be discussed. Fifty grand is a nice little sum and it could do a lot for Burns Lake. Fritz Goossen has come up with a very wise move.

Our medical system in Burns Lake is very important for us all. Swimming pools, skating rinks, and I could go on and on but our hospital and medical clinic should come first.

What good are all these things if we don’t have health, these things would be no good to us. A pool would be nice to have but as it’s already been stated the upkeep alone would be prohibitive for a small town like Burns Lake could afford. Houston and Smithers are having a very hard time supporting their pools.

In fact I hear they have had to cut hours of pool use. I am in favour of Fritz Goossen's plans for improving our medical system in town. This money must be kept here local in our district as it will be much more beneficial to many more of our locals.

Because we deserve it. If we have a fully modern and efficient running hospital we will get the doctors. An operating room is a must as it’s so important for everyone. My remarks are my own and have no reflection on either the paper or my family. I do not want to fault our local hospital as they are doing a great job, the staff are very kind and have great feelings for their patients. They are always smiling and have a kind word for everyone. I must say also very efficient as well.

Olden days

I still remember our Christmas parties we used to have now many years ago both here and growing up on the prairie. I have such wonderful memories of those days. We always had a sleigh and a team of horses and away we would go.

Sleigh bells jingling and lots of singing. There is something about a team of horses and a sleigh.

It’s all got so commercial now I think we have almost forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. For many years we always went to the Christmas Eve service, they were always so popular.

Little poem

With love from a lonely dog I wish someone would tell me...

What it is I’ve done wrong, and why I must be chained outside and left alone so long.

They seemed so glad to have me when I came here as a pup, there were so many things we’d do, while I was growing up.

The master said he’d train me, as a companion dog and friend. The mistress said she’d never fear, to be alone again.

The children said they’d feed me, and brush me every day. They’d play with me and walk me, if I would only stay.

But now the Master “hasn’t time,” the Mistress says I shed. She won’t allow me in the house, not even to be fed.

The children never walk me, they always say “not now.”

I do wish I could please them, can someone tell me how?

All I had, you see, was love, I wish someone could explain.

Just why they said they wanted me, and then left me - on a chain.

Always remember God loves you and so do I.
