Remembrance Day celebration was a good day to gather & show respect

John Keefe and I attended the harvest supper at the Grassy Plains Hall on Saturday evening.

John Keefe and I attended the harvest supper at the Grassy Plains Hall on Saturday evening.

A delicious beef dinner was served with all the good things that go with a dinner. There was such a great variety to chose from. The tables were all decorated up for this special harvest supper. All the proceeds went for improvements to the hall.

I think they did pretty well too as it was to a full and overflowing hall. John and I really enjoyed ourselves. The hall has really come a long way with so many improvements and such a nice large stage.

Grand opening

On Nov. 6 there was a grand opening at the Francois Lake Hall.

The hall was open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Lots of great refreshments and entertainment and lots of visiting.

As you step inside the new doors you will be spellbound with complete change to the whole interior.

As far as I can find out it was built in 1923 so imagine the many years it has served our community. Now it’s starting out with a new lease for life. With so many wonderful years to come for our future generation to enjoy.

The entertainment was supplied by the Tweedsmuir Fiddlers from Southside and Brain Worrall and Lone Spur from Francois Lake.

Due to the grants and donations and the many volunteers who put in hours of planning and hard work to make the hall what it is today.

Snow

It’s now Wednesday morning and guess what, yes sir, we got our snow and big time. No matter how well we are prepared it caught us with our pants down, an expression my dad used to use.

Always something we put off until the last minute. I always get caught it seems. Anyway it’s here to stay so we had better make the best of it. We did have a great fall and the snow did come later than usual.

Good times

Once more our Lakes District Arts Council on Nov. 10 treated us to another musical evening. This was put on by the ‘Company Jump’ an Andrews Sisters tribute.

It was such a wonderful evening entertainment. It brought back so many memories of the music and the singing of the Andrews Sisters. This whole evenings entertainment was just out of this world, it was over too soon. The Sweetpea Swing Band was just great.

The sax music brought back lots of good times we used to have. Most all our local dance bands always had a sax and that was great music. The band really brought back lots of good times we used to have.

We must never forget the generous sponsors who give such great financial help to make these shows what they are. Without the help we would not be able to present these great evenings entertainment we will enjoy.

We must not forget Emily Dickson for her great display and also for her generous giving, thanks Emily.

Looking back

This happened on our home place in the Eyehill in Saskatchewan. It was in the fall and mother was ironing on the dining room table and I was in the room watching her.

I was about 10 years old at the time. We lived in our home about a quarter mile from what was called the bottom trail and our windows looked west and we could see the trail.

All of a sudden there was a crack and a bullet broke the front window making a small hole in the glass. The bullet hit the wall behind me. It was a larger riffle and a heavy bullet.

Dad checked and it came within inches of mother. It would have killed her as it came through the bottom of the glass just waist high. It did not shatter the glass but left a hole the size of the bullet. Dad took his knife and dug out the slug. It looked like a 30-30 he figured. Dad cut a piece of glass and patched the window.

Now the mystery is who was it as there was very little game but antelope was all there was and lots of coyotes. All the traffic was horse drawn and saddle horses so to this day it’s just so long ago I still remember it.

When I see folks hunting close to the residents I always think of that accident that could have killed mother and no one would have known where or what happened. The newer riffles are so powerful now and can carry so far and there are so many homes close to the landing and in this area. So I hope hunters will be very careful and be sure they know where the bullet is going to go.

Time change

I would guess everyone is getting used to the time change. What does it prove except to confuse us. It takes away our evenings so when folks come home from work it’s already dark. So the evening walk is no more. Why can’t they leave us alone? There are places in B.C. that have refused to change time. I understand Peace River is one of them.

The Remembrance Day celebration has come and gone, but the true meaning of what it means to us all we must always remember ‘Lest we forget’ and we must not.

The parade was excellent. Then the service and the laying of the wreaths was so very impressive with the true meaning of what it means to us all.

We must never forget how important the laying of the wreaths really is.

There was a message in our local paper and it was so very important and I will quote “Remembering and honouring our local Veterans.”

After the service there was a lunch served at the legion, this is also very special for old friends to meet once again and talk about next year and think about how many will not be there. Very say but true.

Seems the little animals are starting to get hungry.

Last week Richard and Margaret Neave had a martin hanging around their chicken house. Why have they started to come down closer to our homes, this is odd for them. This is the second one that’s been looking for chickens. Then this morning early a fox dug his way into our daughters chicken house and killed at least six of her laying hens. This a bit expensive as they are young layers.

Time to close up for now, so take care and watch out for the ice that seems to be in many places. Remember God loves you and so do I.
