We all got a surprise last week when the snow hit

It’s Saturday morning bright and early and I am starting my news a day or so a bit early. What a morning this is 16 of April and we have just had a foot of snow dumped onto us. It’s like the old boy said “You can’t win for losing” and looks like that’s it today

It’s Saturday morning bright and early and I am starting my news a day or so a bit early. What a morning this is 16 of April and we have just had a foot of snow dumped onto us. It’s like the old boy said “You can’t win for losing” and looks like that’s it today.

Sure tough on the little birds, also the deer and we must not forget the ranchers who are right in the middle of calving.

I guess I can join the crowd as I had my tires changed yesterday, thought I knew it all. We are okay in a way as we are not flooded out like the provinces east of us. The snow will go and new snow helps the old snow to go a bit faster.

Pellet plant

A very concerned citizen asked me to put a little burp in my news regarding the new pellet plant. He noticed the smoke belching out of the plant, it goes 24 hours a day. But L.D. News has written a story on page 3 about this so I guess that will answer any concerns.

Music for the soul

Last week Lone Spur entertained at the Pines for the residents there. It’s always such a nice place to go and so many nice people there.

It was unfortunate we were a bit late in starting but all in all it turned out well. I always enjoy going up there as it makes an afternoon pass for the residents who are more or less shut-in.

Music always cheers us all up and helps pass the time. Whenever I feel in the dumps I turn on some music and it cheers me up. I like that good old time toe tapping stuff, it’s good for your constitution, sure works for me.

L.D. Choir

On Sunday (Palm Sunday) there was a very impressive service held at the First Mennonite Church to celebrate this special day to start out the Easter week.

The L.D. Choir and the Southside ladies choir also took part in the service. There was a light lunch served after the service with lots of visiting and fellowship.

The L.D. Choir is getting very well known for their performances and they well deserve it. It takes lots of time and effort to bring it up to the high standard it is.

My brother

My brother’s birthday April 20 (1938). I thought that when mother and dad had me I thought they would not want another one like me. The main reason was I was so sickly and dad used to tell me of the many times they just about lost me. Brother Peter was fine, which was a plus for the family. He is a great guy and a grand brother. We had a great life growing up in Saskatchewan, regardless of the hard times dad and mother had to go through. There is six years between us.

Open water

There is about a two mile strip of open water in front of us now. It’s nice to see the open water again. Won’t be long until we will see some fishermen trying their luck. Lots of ducks and also some mallards among them. The eagles watching them pretty close. Folks have seen some snow geese flying over and also some sand hill cranes. Two big flocks of them. It’s nice to see all the birds as it brings spring a bit closer.

A little story on my dad

In the old days they were getting tired of beans and rolled oats so for a change of diet dad shot a sand hill crane. It was so big they had to cut off it’s legs to get it to fit in the oven. It took all day to roast it. It looked good and smelt good but when they went to cut it up no knife was sharp enough for the operation.

Dad said it was impossible to eat as it was though as an old boot. So the next best thing was give it to the dogs. Even the dogs had problems it was so tough. The moral of the story is don’t shoot a sand hill crane if you expect to eat it.

We need directors

On Tuesday night there was a meeting of the Burns Lake and district rebroadcasting society held at Alan and Marion Blackwell’s home on Osatuik Rd. Due to the lack of interest there was no election of officers.

There will be another meeting at the Blackwell home on May 24, time will be 7 p.m. If this closes down you will lose the off air TV and radio.

Shaw has given a five year ultimatum which the meeting was not in favour of. If this is not met the whole thing will close down.

As most every one seems to have a TV dish maybe this rebroadcast society will have to close down due to a lack of interest. This has been a good thing for the community but maybe it will just have to close down. Maybe as the old saying goes all good things come to an end, too bad but it does happen.

Road trip

On Wednesday last my friend Ron Meadow and I took a quick trip to Smithers. Had to pick up another bumper for our pickup.

It was a used one from the auto wreckers there. Talk about wrecks, there must be just too many to even count. If you ever need parts they have them and very reasonable.

One thing we did notice lots of the fields are already greening up so they are ahead of us. Smithers always seems to be a busy town with lots going on.

Get well soon

Don Baker, a well known rancher from Takysie Lake, had a bad accident with one of his range cows last week. He was helping her calf and the mother was not too happy with Don. It got him down and broke a rib and punctured a lung. Don is at home recuperating. We all hope and pray for a quick and 100 percent recovery. Ranchers are pretty tough guys and it takes more than an old cow to put them down.

A little story

A little girl whose father was into politics was reading the little girl a bedtime story. The little girl asked her daddy “Why do all fairy stories start with once upon a time.” Her fathers answer was “No, there are a whole series of fairy tales that begin with if I’m elected I promise.”

I hope everyone had a happy and blessed Easter to all our friends. And always remember God loves you and so do I.
