Burns Lake BodyCount members are busy training and gaining experience. Seven members traveled to Prince George to participate in what was for many, their first or second roller derby scrimmage.

Joined by the hosts, Rated PG Thrashers, the Bulkley Valley Bruisers, and the Northcoast Nightmares, players were split into two teams, giving the new players a chance to work on their skills and game play. New BodyCount member, Jaq Bowman, supported the team as a Non-Skating Official – keeping a keen eye on the timer in the penalty box. President and founder, Trever Peterson, also volunteered in the score keeping booth. The white team dominated the Black team with a final score of 190 to 70.

There are many aspects of roller derby to love: the amazing skill and athleticism, the inclusive community, the outfits, and the names. BodyCount has been practicing for nearly a year and many of the members have chosen their derby names. The members that participated in the scrimmage were: Nonie Little- Noodle, and Monica Benoit – Anna Sassin. Members that participated in both the scrimmage and the bout were: Carrie MacLellan – Polly Rocket, Dominique Rutchka – Tequila SlamHer, Janette Derksen – Whipping J, and Lisa Swales – Twiggy Smalls.

The four skaters joined Rated PG players against a mixed Nightmare and Bruisers team. The level of play was intense as many of the opponents are part of the Northwest BC team. Although the score at the final whistle was 275 to 94, Burns Lake BodyCount was elated and grateful to have participated in the event.

Such cooperative events between teams in the north is an opportunity for BodyCount to make connections, and as a central location, to organize future bouts for our community to enjoy. So many exciting things are on the horizon for the team. A custom jersey design has been approved and will be ordered soon.
