The month of April brings interactive activities around Burns Lake.

To celebrate Poetry Month, the Burns Lake Public Library is having a contest to mark and celebrate the month. The task is to make a poem or sentence using book spines. Use your own books, or come to the library and browse the stacks. Take a photo, or show one of the librarians, and you will be entered in a draw to win a $50 Burns Lake Chamber of Commerce gift certificate. The library contest is open to all ages.
Next Met opera broadcast in the continuing series
The next opera broadcast in the series of co-presentations by the Beacon Theatre and the Lakes District Arts Council will be on Sunday, April 21 at 1 p.m. sharp. The featured opera this month is Guiseppe Verdi’s La Forza del Destino.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Verdi’s grand tale of ill-fated love, deadly vendetta, and family strife, with stellar soprano Lise Davidsen in her role debut as Leonora, the tormented and thrilling heroine. Director Mariusz Treliński sets the scene in a contemporary world, making extensive use of the Met’s turntable to represent the unstoppable advance of destiny that drives the opera’s calamitous events.
The distinguished cast also features tenor Brian Jagde as Leonora’s forbidden beloved Don Alvaro, baritone Igor Golovatenko as her vengeful brother Don Carlo, mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi as the fortune teller Preziosilla, bass-baritone Patrick Carfizzi as Fra Melitone, and bass Soloman Howard as both Leonora’s father and Padre Guardiano.

All tickets for the Met opera broadcasts are $12, and are available at the door starting at 12:30 p.m. the day of the performance on Sunday, April 21.
Open Mic Coffee House
The next coffee house in this year’s continuing series will be held on Friday, April 26 starting at 7 p.m. in the Burns Lake Heritage Church on First Avenue. Admission is by donation at the door. You can follow the sponsoring group, The Burns Lake Music Society, on Facebook.
Spring Tea in support of the Lakes District Secondary School Grad Class
Tea, coffee and cake will be provided in support of the Lakes District Secondary School Grad Class of 2024 on Saturday, May 4 between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. at 457 W Highway 16 - the big blue church. Admission is by donation at the door.
