Residents in the Burns Lake area might have recently noticed brown water coming out of their taps.

Its dark colour comes from the mineral manganese in the water.

According to the Village of Burns Lake, residents are advised to run the cold water taps until clear water emerges.

Small amounts of manganese in water don’t pose health risks and are mainly an aesthetic concern, as explained in a 2016 public study by Health Canada “Manganese in Drinking Water”.

The allowable standard for manganese in water might be under review in the near future, the Village said.

Work is underway to apply for a $4.8-million Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program grant to build a water treatment plant in Burns Lake, the Village added.
