Walk honours residential school survivors

About 10 people of various First Nations in the region walked from the old site of Lejac Residential School – located between Fraser Lake and Fort Fraser – to Burns Lake to honour residential school survivors last weekend. Organizer Heather Holland, whose parents attended Lejac, said it’s important to remember the negative impacts that residential schools have had on survivors and their dependents.

“This walk will honour our stories, heal our hearts and remind those around us the strength and resilience we hold,” she said. “No matter how hard this atrocity tried to kill us as Indigenous people, we stand strong.” The walk ended ended at Margaret Patrick Memorial Hall with traditional singing, drumming and heartfelt speeches from Lake Babine Nation representatives, elders and survivors.
