Burns Lake's Special Olympics bocce team is headed to the 2025 Special Olympics BC Summer Games.
The games will be held in Prince George from July 10 to 12. The competing athletes are Danny Tress, Jason Helmkay, Matthew Sallenback, and Josh Waters, coached by Karen Wilson.
The team earned their chance to compete at the Summer Games in a regional tournament held last summer, which saw teams from Prince George, Smithers, Terrace, Prince Rupert, and Burns Lake vying for the qualification.
More recently, Special Olympics of British Columbia's Burns Lake chapter (SOBC Burns Lake) hosted another regional competition at Spirit Square in Burns Lake on June 14, with teams from Smithers, Prince George and Quesnel attending. Burns Lake placed second in that tournament.
The team will be joined at the Summer Games by Rebecca Rodriguez SOBC Region 7 mission staff, Thomas Goertzen as a 1-1 support, and Tina Giesbrecht as SOBC Region 7 Chef de Mission.
