Accident claims lives

RCMP have advised that foggy and icy road conditions played a factor in this tragic incident.

Houston RCMP and Smithers Traffic Services continue to investigate a serious Motor vehicle collision that has claimed the lives of a couple who were on their way home to Prince Rupert BC.

On Dec. 29, 2013 at approximately 10 pm, Houston RCMP received a call of a motor vehicle collision on Hwy.16 approximately 18 km west of Houston.

Once on scene members learned that a Ford pick-up truck was traveling east bound on Hwy/ 16 when an SUV traveling west bound started spinning and lost control. Subsequently, the pick-up truck t-boned the west bound SUV as it spun into the oncoming east bound lane.

The local fire department and BC ambulance services were also called to the scene. Both occupants in the SUV sustained life threatening injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. The couple were later identified as residents from Prince Rupert BC. The two occupants in the pick up truck were transported to the Bulkley Valley District Hospital with serious, non life threatening injuries.

The highway was closed for a number of hours as the scene was investigated by a collision analyst and Smithers Traffic Services.
