Burns Lake Band to elect new chief and council

The Burns Lake Band (BLB), or Ts’il Kaz Koh, will elect a new chief and two councillors this Friday.

The candidates for chief include incumbent Dan George, Greg Favelle and Jean Sam.

Candidates for council include incumbent Daniel Cunningham, Clayton Charlie, Pius Samuel Charlie, Ellen Lorentz, Cecelia Sam and Ryan Tibbett.

The new term of office for the BLB will be four years. The BLB is one of seven B.C. First Nations that have opted-in to the First Nations elections act since it came into force in April 2015. The BLB's previous term of office was two years.

General voting day will be held on Oct. 21, 2016 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the band's office. There will be no advance polls.

All votes will be counted at the band's office immediately following the close of the polling station on Oct. 21, 2016.

According to Hans Suhr, electoral officer, all electors are invited to attend the counting of the ballots. Successful candidates will be declared elected right after the count is completed.

The Burns Lake Band is made up of approximately 150 on and off reserve members.
