The Burns Lake Fire and Rescue Department has recently donated firefighting equipment to developing countries.
The equipment was donated through Firefighters Without Borders, an organization dedicated to helping fire departments around the world so that they’re prepared to deal with the next emergency - big or small.
The equipment donated by the Burns Lake Fire and Rescue Department includes approximately 30 sets of turnout gear, helmets and sets of gloves, along with several pairs of rubber boots.
“The gear that we donated was all gear that no longer can be used in North America due to our strict regulations for occupation safety,” explained Burns Lake fire chief Rob Krause. “By donating it through Firefighters Without Borders, the gear gets to help firefighters in developing countries.”
“This is the first time that we have donated, and we are very glad to be able to help out in some small way,” added Krause.
Krause says he has recently learned that Alfred Gonjoran, a medic and firefighter in Quezon City, Philippines, received some of their gear after Gonjoran liked and shared the Burns Lake Fire and Rescue Department’s Facebook page.
Gonjoran told Lakes District News the Burns Lake Fire Department has “a big heart.”
“The donation was very helpful, not only for me but my colleagues too, especially for those who really can’t afford the equipment and suit,” said Gonjoran. “We’re very glad that we were chosen. It’s really great help for us firefighter volunteers when we’re in a rescue mission.”
Firefighters Without Borders was started by a group of Mississauga, Ontario firefighters looking to pay tribute to the victims of 9/11. According to the organization, they ensure that all equipment donated is safe and in good working order.
