Burns Lake's monthly soup kitchen, which started last April, is taking a break for the summer months.

Island Gospel Fellowship pastor Ed Peters explained that summer is a difficult time to gather volunteers as most of them are out of town or involved in bible camps.

The soup kitchen was held in April, May and June at the Vineyard Church in Burns Lake, with approximately 40 people attending each one.

Peters said the soup kitchen will be up and running again in September.

Although it started as a monthly event, depending on the number of volunteers, donations and the needs of the community, the soup kitchen could possibly become a weekly event.

A couple of years ago, the Burns Lake Vineyard Fellowship considered starting a soup kitchen in Burns Lake to help families in need. However, the small fellowship thought that starting a soup kitchen in Burns Lake at the time was too much of a challenge.

The idea was brought back this year by John Rankin, pastor at the Island Gospel Fellowship Church, and Peter Goertzen, pastor at the Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church.

"We believe there is a need in the community," said Rankin earlier this year.

Together, Rankin and Goertzen gathered support from other churches in town to ensure that the soup kitchen would become a reality in Burns Lake.

The pastors said they can always use more volunteers. For more information, contact John Rankin at 250-692-7553 or e-mail igf@telus.net.
