Burns Lake mayoral candidate Chris Beach said 15 to 20 of his election signs have been stolen.
He said most of the signs were taken from Hwy. 16 and Centre Street, and that some of the signs he placed at Lake Babine Nation’s Woyenne community were also taken.
“I have no idea [who did it]; it could be some kids having fun,” he said. “But now that it’s happened again there’s a possibility of a concerted effort.”
“Certain people don’t want me to be mayor.”
In total, Beach has placed 65 signs around town.
“I spent a lot of my own personal money on signs; they are expensive,” he said. “It’s so disgusting; you don’t just take somebody’s signs down.”
Beach said none of his signs were stolen last time he ran for council in 2014.
“I’m really ticked off about it,” he said. “I’m disappointed because it interferes with the democratic process.”
Beach said he has been placing new signs around town to replace the ones stolen.
“I’m putting them back up as I go,” he said. “I’m determined to make sure the signs stay up through the election.”
The Burns Lake RCMP said they are “aware of the situation and have an open file.”
Councillor candidate Michael Riis-Christianson, who also has signs around town, said three of his signs have been vandalized. However, he said he hadn’t checked all of his 20 signs.
General voting day will take place on Dec. 10, 2016, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the village office.
