Fatal accident on Hwy. 16 at Rose Lake

Highway closed in both directions; detour expected to be ready soon

UPDATE:

The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a  male who died following a motor vehicle incident near Burns Lake on Sept. 2, 2013.

He was Rodney Randolph Hoffman, aged 71, of Kamloops.

Mr. Hoffman was the driver and sole occupant of a vehicle, which was  travelling eastbound on Highway 16 about 11:40 a.m. on Sept. 2, when it  was in collision with a westbound motor home about 30 kilometres west of

Burns Lake. Mr. Hoffman was deceased at the scene.

Highway 16 is closed in both directions at Rose Lake, 26 kms west of Burns Lake, as RCMP respond to a fatal accident that happened at approximately 12 p.m. this afternoon.

According to Burns Lake RCMP on the scene, traffic may begin to move again before 2 p.m. this afternoon. Highway flaggers are being brought to the scene to facilitate a detour.

RCMP are working with traffic resources from Smithers, Vanderhoof, and Kitimat for collision analysis.

Details are few but at least one fatality is reported. The Burns Lake Fire and Rescue Department was also called out to respond.

UPDATE: Highway 16 is now open.

RCMP have determined that an east bound Jeep Liberty crossed the center line and collided head on with a west bound Ace Motor home. The male driver and lone occupant of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the motor home, a man and a woman, were taken to Burns Lake Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The highway was closed in both directions so that forensic experts can identify and document the physical evidence at the scene. Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure are aware and on scene.

The investigation is still in its infancy and causal factors have yet to be determined. A Collision Reconstructionist has been called and is enroute to the scene of the crash.

At this time names are being with held pending notification of next of kin.

Police, along with the BC Coroner's Office continue to investigate and would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed this crash, as well as to anyone who may have witnessed the vehicles involved prior to the collision.
