Village of Granisle Mayor Linda McGuire is running unopposed for re-election.

Meanwhile incumbent councillors Karen Barber, Zarna Dilley and Thomas Liversidge will be competing against Marilyn Berglund, Calvin Thompson and Randy Weiberg for the village’s four councillor spots.

McGuire told Lakes District News that village council has stayed focused on the village’s age-friendly initiatives and long-term sustainability.

Through its Healthy Granisle project, the village has developed indoor and outdoor programming intended to improve the overall health and well-being of local seniors.

As part of this program, health and exercise professionals work with community members to encourage increased participation in activities such as healthy cooking classes, Tai Chi, hiking the local trails and learning how to use exercise equipment safely.

Earlier this year the village also secured over $5 million through federal grants to build a new water treatment plant, which will provide secondary treatment of the village’s potable water. The plant is expected to be completed early next summer.

“Our community has faced many challenges with aging infrastructure. The infrastructure was built to last the life of the [last] mine, which was 25 years. This year our community is 47 years old. This grant funding will allow us to proceed and secure a secondary water treatment for decades to come,” McGuire said earlier this year.

Granisle’s 283 estimated eligible voters will have an advanced voting opportunity Wednesday, Oct. 10, while general voting day takes place Saturday, Oct. 20.

Both voting opportunities will take place at the village’s council chambers from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
