John Rustad named to cabinet

Re-elected Nechako Lakes member of legislative assembly John Rustad was named to a cabinet position in the Christy Clark Liberal government.

Newly re-elected Nechako Lakes member of legislative assembly John Rustad was named to a cabinet position in the Christy Clark Liberal government on June 7, 2013.

His position as Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation will be a challenging one. The portfolio is expected to continue working on non-treaty benefit agreements, as well further work on long-term treaties and collaboration  with First Nations in the development of natural gas and other resources.

“No question, it’s an important position,” Rustad said. “I look forward to the challenges.”

Rustad was sworn in on Monday. He’ll take up the details of his portfolio soon afterward. He said that it was too soon to speak of specifics, but that the there is no doubt that natural gas development and negotiations with First Nations will be critical.

“One of the big priorities in our new government is LNG [development],” said Rustad. “Relationships with First Nations are a critical part of that.”

Formerly, Rustad held the position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. He was integral in the development of a forest resource management plan that swayed Hampton Affiliates in favour of rebuilding the Babine Forest Products sawmill in Burns Lake.

“I’m going to be very busy with this portfolio, but forestry was my number one concern and area during the election,” Rustad said.

“I represent my riding, and that’s what I’ll be doing in conjunction with the duties the premier has asked me to take on.”

Lake Babine Nation Chief Wilf Adam, recently back to full-time duties after a brief medical leave, was supportive of the decision to appoint Rustad to cabinet.

“It’s wonderful that John made it to cabinet and I am happy that he is taking on the Aboriginal Affairs ministry,” Adam said. “He will do well in that portfolio and I wish him well.”

Donn Barnett, MLA for Cariboo - Chilcotin replaces Rustad as parliamentary secretary to the minister of forests, lands and natural resource operations and rural development.
