An investigation into the police motor vehicle collision, which occurred at 4 Avenue and Winnipeg St. in Prince George, on April 15, 2012, continues.
An investigative team, with the North District Traffic Services unit continues to examine all the evidence relating to this injury crash. Investigators have interviewed witnesses and are conducting mechanical inspections of both vehicles.
The collision reconstructionist is conducting vehicle examinations and downloading electronic systems in the vehicles.
Neighborhood enquiries were conducted in the area of the collision to determine if there were any other witnesses to the crash.
Two of the occupants of the 2008 Honda Civic have been released from the hospital.
The third occupant remains in the hospital in stable condition with internal injuries. Everyone in the Honda is expected to recover from the injuries sustained.
The operator of the police vehicle, a fully marked Chevrolet Suburban, was examined and released from the hospital as well. He sustained minor head and whiplash injuries in the crash. He is currently off-shift.
The investigation to date has revealed the police vehicle was northbound on Winnipeg Street, at approximately 7:58 p.m., when it entered into a collision with a 2008 Honda Civic.
Police are investigating indications that the police vehicle was approaching a red light. The police vehicle was not traveling with its emergency lights and siren operating. The police officer was responding to a call, but it did not require an emergency response.
The investigation has revealed that both the occupant of the police Suburban and the occupants in the Honda Civic were wearing their seat belts and investigators feel their occupant restraints prevented more serious injuries.
The investigation has further revealed that alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in this crash.
