A new sign at the west end of Burns Lake reminds drivers that, beginning Oct. 1, winter tires are required on many highways throughout the province.

Signs are posted on each of the designated highways to advise motorists where winter tires are required. These signs are generally located approaching high mountain passes and interior highways where conditions can change from rain to snow very quickly.

Until March 31, all vehicles are required to use M+S or mountain/snowflake tires on most major highways. According to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, although not required, it is a good idea to also carry chains for extreme weather.
