Burns Lake resident Rhoda Anderson was honoured with the Governor General of Canada’s sovereign’s medal for volunteers last week in Burns Lake. Anderson has been volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society for the past 35 years, raising funds and awareness through events such as the relay for life and cops for cancer. Burns Lake acting Mayor John Illes said Anderson has united a community of volunteers and provided mentorship and support through the Canadian Cancer Society. The sovereign’s medal for volunteers recognizes the exceptional achievements of Canadian volunteers from across the country in a wide range of fields.
