Christmas came a little earlier for two Burns Lake residents who have been awarded Ike Barber Transfer Scholarships to help them continue their studies at a different institution.

Jody Stronstad and Meaghan McFee, both of the College of New Caledonia will each receive $5,000 towards their studies when they move to UNBC, the Irving K. Barber BC Scholarship Society recently announced.

The scholarships are aimed at undergraduate students who have finished at least one year at a public post-secondary institution, who have high grades and have engaged in volunteer service at their school or in the community.

McFee and Stronstad are among 171 students across British Columbia who were chosen for the program, $855,000 of which is given annually for the scholarships, part of a $15 million endowment set up by the province in 2006.

Programs of the Irving K. Barber BC Scholarship Society are administered by the Victoria Foundation.
