Doreen Louise SHELFORD

September 13, 2006

In Loving Memory of

Doreen was born at the Southbank hospital (up on the hill) to Arther and Alice Eastment of Colleymount, on March 19 1920. Her father passed away when she was very young. Her mother was later married to Del Cassidy after which Marj, Ken and Barbara were born. They lived at Colleymount, Del ran store and Alice was the Postmistress for many years. Doreen started her school years boarding out at Wistaria with Marie Kerr and later at Tatalrose with the Prebbles because they were very few schools in the area at that time. When at Prebbles she walked several miles by herself to the shore of Francois Lake, where Del would come by boat to pick her up so she could be home for weekends. During grade eight she was able to stay home and go to school in Colleymount. She then took three more years by correspondence with the help of the teacher who boarded with the family. Doreen then enrolled in a secretarial/business course in Prince Rupert where she worked for her room and board in a store. After she finished her course she worked for Sid Thomson and then for the U.S. Army during W.W.II.

She married Hugh Shelford on June 18, 1947 and lived on Ootsa lake until it was flooded in 1952. They then moved to a cabin under Colleymount until their new home was built and it was there that they ranched for many years and raised their children Tom, Mike, Doug and Kathy. Doreen was very active in community events; she was secretary for the recreation and treasurer for the Lakes District Fall Fair for many years. Through out her life she was an avid gardener, her flower beds, fruit trees, ornamentals and vegetable gardens were a joy to look at.

She spent several years nursing Hugh before he passed away in 1986. In the years that followed she continued community work, gardening, did some traveling, and enjoyed her grandchildren who all live quite close. She was able to remain in her home at Colleymount until Dec. 2005 when she moved to the Pines in Burns Lake where she passed away on September 13, 2006. Doreen was laid to rest on Friday September 22, 2006.

She was Predeceased by husband Hugh Shelford, and brother Ken Cassidy. Doreen leaves behind sister Marj Short (Innis) and Babs Shelford. Sister-in-law Peggy Shelford and Della Cassidy.
