William George Sommerfeld, passed away July 18, 2007 at the age of 91. He was born near Vanguard, Saskatchewan on August 14, 1915.
His family, recent arrivals to Canada from Russia had taken up a homestead where he would spend the early years of life. During the depression years he found himself “riding the rods” in search of work, returning to Saskatchewan in 1938 to marry Helena Lieding, his partner for nearly 50 years.
Later in 1955 he moved his family to BC, a place he discovered during his travels and hoped to someday return to.
He moved to Burns Lake - Houston area in 1961 where he lived almost 30 years. Working in sawmills, spending good times with family and friends, endless fishing trips and outdoor activities were his life.
Bill, was predeceased by his wife Helena Sommerfeld in 1997 and grandson William Polzin in 1998.
He is survived by his son Gerald (Darlene) Sommerfeld, daughter Marion (James) Polzin, son Ronald Sommerfeld, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
His faith in God, family and friends kept him through the hard times. He will be remembered for his good spirit, humour, and caring ways. He will be fondly missed.
