This letter is in response to the story ‘Wildlife traps concern dog owners’ published in Lakes District News’ Feb. 8 issue.
I’ll tell you a bit of a story that the game warden didn’t mention - how stray dogs kill wildlife.
I live two miles east of town. About 10 years ago there was a heard of deer on the rock bluff east of town. During one winter, that herd was reduced to three or four. My neighbour and I asked ourselves, “What happened?”
We found several kills so we thought it was wolves, so we set live traps and we got dogs, how many I forget. They were running in packs and killing our deer.
We have lost our deer but we also got rid of the dogs that were killing our deer, so if you have a dog and it’s not on a leash, and it’s away from home for more than an hour, rest assured - your dog is up to no good. If you lose it, that’s too bad.
We have always had German shepherd dogs but kept them in a kennel. So on average, how many dogs end up at the village dog kennel? Take care of your dog and you should not run into the problems.
