New recreation program

The Village of Burns Lake recreation department is excited to announce the new Recreation Advancement Program (RAP).

The Village of Burns Lake recreation department is excited to announce the new Recreation Advancement Program (RAP) which is now being offered at Lakes District Secondary School.

RAP provides an opportunity for 10 high school students in grades 10 through 12 to become qualified recreation instructors. The program is free of charge and participating students will obtain skills, experience, certification and knowledge in recreation and will become qualified to instruct recreation activities that take place in the Lakes District.

Components of RAP include training courses, volunteer hours to gain experience and an opportunity for one or two students who complete all of the required training and volunteer hours to be hired by the village recreation department and possibly Lake Babine Nation for summer 2012 student recreation positions.

The purpose of this program is to develop a group of interested youth to become involved in recreation and achieve certification. Through training, students who complete the program will be able to pass on their expertise to others through recreation programming and events and the community will benefit from the group of skilled instructors available.

This is a great opportunity for local youth to experience the excitement of working and/or volunteering for recreation events and activities that are offered in the Lakes District.

"Our community relies on volunteers to make most of the activities and events happen in the Lakes District.

The program will contribute to the future of volunteerism in our community by providing for opportunity to youth to gain experience in recreation activities," commented mayor Bernice Magee.
