The Burns Lake Braves hockey team will not be lacing up their skates this coming season.

After a meeting last week the team have decided to fold.

Wes Hart, Burns Lake Braves goalie said to Lakes District News that a lack of players has forced the team off the ice.

It's a case of history repeating itself for the team.

In the 2009/2010 season the team was relaunched after a four year hiatus. At this time Hart said to Lakes District News the 2004/2005 season demise of the team was due to a loss of 13 core players due to work and family commitments and others leaving the community.

The team carries 30 players, with an 18 player line up however Hart said there just is not enough players for the coming season.

"We lost a dozen players for this coming season, they have families and some have moved away, some have their kids in minor hockey, it's a huge commitment [playing on the team]," Hart said.

He went on to say that he doesn't think holding team tryouts would net more players for the team. "The chances are slim in tryouts .... there are not enough players in Burns Lake," he added.

Not only is the news a blow for the many local fans that turn up to support the local team but the loss with be felt across the community.

The team played a total of eight home games last year, bringing in not only much needed revenue for the Tom Forsyth Memorial Arena but also fans from other communities who would stay at local motels, shop at the stores and dine in restaurants.

Village of Burns Lake recreation coordinator Logan Wilson said the demise of the team is going to be a loss for Burns Lake.

"The Braves are a huge thing for the community," he said, adding that they had a lot of local supporters, not to mention a loss in arena revenue.

Wilson said the Tom Forsyth Memorial Arena had received a $72 per hour rental fee from the Braves for every home game.
