Burns Lake coach leads team to success

Local athlete Nicole Gerow (middle of front row) was the head coach of B.C.’s rifle shooting team at the 2017 North American Indigenous Games, which were held in Toronto last month. With the assistance of assistant coach Rick Joe, Gerow coached the athletes via weekly conference calls, emails, photos and videos. The team came home with three gold, eight silver and three bronze medals.

Approximately 30 children had a chance to learn and practice soccer skills with professional coaches that brought their international experience to Burns Lake last week. Head coaches Brett Hyslop and Steph Steiner had the assistance of a guest coach from Mexico this year - Andres Sanchez. The World Cup Soccer Camp wrapped up with a tournament last Saturday.

The Burns Lake Mountain Biking Association hosted its tenth annual Big Pig Mountain Biking Festival Aug. 11 to 13. Despite Boer Mountain being almost completely socked in with smoke for most of the week, the event had a good turnout. By Saturday afternoon, the much-needed rain put a slight damper on the evening entertainment, but mountain bikers are tough.

Burns Lake hosts B.C Bike Ride event

Approximately 70 bikers from all over the world made a stop in Burns Lake last week as part of the B.C. Bike Ride North, an event that connects mountain bikers on a tour of six northern B.C. communities. Bikers used the Kager Lake campground as their base. According to the Burns Lake Mountain Biking Association, this was a great opportunity to showcase the local area and trails.

Two Burns Lake athletes - Brandon Larsen and Brendan Alec - have recently returned home from the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg. They were among the 15 players selected for Team B.C. Men’s Softball. Although the athletes didn’t bring home any medals, they said they made new friends while having a wonderful experience at the games.
